Tests show clean Detroit water, but boil-water advisory remains until results of second test

The Great Lakes Water Authority, which oversees the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department, says it has tested water affected by an equipment malfunction this week and results are “clear.”

But until a second round of tests returns clear results, the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality is advising that a 48-hour boil-water advisory, applied since Wednesday morning, remain in effect.

“While these results are a sign that there is nothing wrong with the water…a second round of tests results will be returned tomorrow and upon a second clear result, GLWA will recommend that the boil water advisory be lifted.”

The GLWA’s Water Works Park Water Treatment Facility had an equipment malfunction on Tuesday evening, leading DWSD to issue the advisory for Detroit residents living in the bounds of Linwood, McNichols, Conner and the Detroit River, as well as the cities of Hamtramck and Highland Park.

The malfunction led to low-water pressure, which can lead to higher incidences of bacterial presence. The GLWA has been testing for bacteriological samples since the advisory went into effect.
