Six Black-Owned Breakfast Spots in Detroit

Having breakfast with an associate from Comcast this week and ended up downtown in a buzzing little breakfast eatery on Griswold; paid $1 in parking which wasn’t bad but the walking in the cute heels wasn’t a good; breakfast in Detroit can be a challenge.

While some days call for a big sit-down breakfast and other days a quick bite to go can do the job. Detroit’s list of Black-owned spots has got you covered from fluffy egg white bagels to pecan-dripping waffles. From the east side hole-in-the-wall to the Eastern Market pop-up; we, here at BLAC have decided from now on that anyone that we know coming in town will have a running list of great Black-owned breakfast spots to eat. Presented by BLAC Detroit, here are some of our favorite spots.

Dime Store

Dime Store is a restaurant in downtown Detroit serving scratch-made breakfast, lunch and brunch food all day, using the freshest, high quality ingredients to handcraft distinctive dishes in a friendly, casual environment. From their Cheesesteak Benny and Duck Bop Hash, to our Bacon Parm & Truffle Fries and Grilled Salmon Sandwich, their menu is a unique blend of scratch-made traditional favorites and creative combinations.

Located at 719 Griswold St. #180, Detroit, Michigan inside the Chrysler House. Open 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. Thursdays to Tuesdays and closed Wednesdays.

Le Petit Dejeuner

Le Petit Dejeuner is an elevated eatery with traditional breakfast plates dished out in a relaxed space decorated with old-timey decor. Family Style Dining allows you to order multiple items from the menu and share with everyone at the table. Both small and large parties can taste a little of this or a lot of that. You simply take what you want from the platter and pass it on. “Breakfast” is now the meal that allows families to dine together. They have $10 chicken and waffles on Thursdays.

Joe Louis Southern Kitchen

Joe Louis Southern Kitchen, which had to delay its opening by months because of the pandemic, wasn’t open long when the restaurant in the New Center area was hit by one of the floods that swept through Metro Detroit this summer. Joe Louis Southern Kitchen, 6549 Woodward in Detroit, is owned and managed by Cannon and Joe Louis II. Chefs Hakeem Biddle and David Mendez designed the menu which features key lime pie flapjacks, shrimp and grits, bananas Foster and a dish that is said to be the late boxer’s favorite, country fried steak cheese grits.

Located 6549 Woodward Avenue, Detroit, Michigan. Open Sundays, Wednesdays to Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.; and on Mondays and Tuesdays 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Detroit Breakfast

Detroit Breakfast Club is known for our breakfast, we serve grits pancakes, and omelettes but they also serve seafood chicken and sandwiches.

Heavenly Chicken & Waffles

Heavenly Chicken & Waffles uses fresh Amish chickens and real milk and cream to create the world’s most delicious chicken wings and waffle combination. Sunday’s Best Detroit – The Brunch Spot
