Seeking Nominations for Our Youth Who “Do the Right Thing”

The Urban League of Detroit & Southeastern Michigan (ULDSEM) is inviting community members, schools, religious institutions, and community-based organizations to nominate youth for the 2021 “Do the Right Thing” Awards. Nominations must be submitted no later than October 21, 2021 through the online form click here to access or contact Shelita Richmond at (313) 831-5132 for a paper application. 

Nominations are open to all youth in grades 5-12 (ages 10-18 years) residing in Southeastern Michigan who are making genuine contributions, excelling in school, sports, religious institutions, serving their community and/or are otherwise engaged in constructive activities.  

All 2021 “Do the Right Thing” nominees will also be invited to attend the Detroit Urban League’s 56th Annual Guild Gala on December 4, 2021 at The Westin Southfield, where youth awardees and nominees will be recognized as a part of the celebration and award ceremony. 

The “Do the Right Thing” Award aims to recognize the countless youth right here in Southeastern Michigan who endeavor to “do the right thing” daily, yet whose actions and activities are seldom recognized or celebrated in the media or in other venues. Since 1996, we have joined with the National Urban League in a nation-wide initiative to celebrate these positive youth behaviors in our community each year through this award. We believe it is important to acknowledge these youth for setting positive examples for their peers, and to provide visibility for their contributions.  

Since 1916, the Urban League of Detroit & Southeastern Michigan has been building bridges in Detroit and Southeastern Michigan communities to enable African Americans and other persons of color to achieve their fullest potential. An affiliate of the National Urban League, ULDSEM has anticipated and responded to the changing needs of the metropolitan Detroit community through programs assisting with employment counseling and placement; women, infant, and children health and nutrition; youth academic and life-skills training; and the improvement of the socioeconomic conditions of the disadvantaged in the community.
