Noel Night, Holiday Events in Detroit Made Weekend Bright

The city shines during the holiday season! Here’s a brief recap of some of the great events that happened on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013.

ver the weekend, the Motor City was additionally the city of lights, as several local events illuminated Detroit with a bustling glow on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013.
Kicking off the evening, metro Detroiters stepped out and braved the cold for the warmth and hospitality of Midtown at the 41st annual Noel Night celebration. The event-highlighted by art displays, hands-on activities for kids and performances throughout local venues-included a seasonal art ice sculpting challenge in front of the Detroit Institute of Arts.
Downtown by the river, the art of music was recognized and celebrated as Motown Records founder Berry Gordy was awarded a lifetime Achievement Award at the Legacy in Motion gala at Cobo Center.
The annual gala, hosted by Real Times Media and the Detroit's Michigan Chronicle, celebrates individuals and organizations that are making positive developments in the city, with an emphasis on the theme "living in the city" this year.
The music mogul was honored with other notable Detroiters who were recognized for their standout achievements in 2013, with Gordy sharing in his acceptance speech: "My first job was as a newspaper boy for the Michigan Chronicle," as reported by the Michigan Chronicle.
In additional gala news, the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan continued its annual effort to raise money and awareness for kidney disease at the ninth annual Kidney Ball at MGM Grand Detroit. And a few blocks over, nearly half a million dollars was raised for the preservation of history, at the Detroit Historical Museum's annual Society Ball at Fillmore Detroit.
