New chicken and waffle restaurant opens in Detroit

oming to Mighty Wing Shop at Greenfield and the Lodge feels like coming home. Laughter and inside jokes from servers, regular customers known by their favorite meals – solid camaraderie for a shop open since October that built its presence via Instagram and word-of-mouth.

“There’s nothing around here where you can sit down – White Castle, and that’s it,” manager Camille Williams says. Mighty Wing Shop does fill a void; the Greenfield-Eight Mile-Lodge Freeway corridor has plenty of businesses, but few restaurants.

Mighty Wing is the second eatery from Dennis Reed, who owns Mighty Sub Shop on Seven Mile and has stakes in the nightclubs Opyum and 211 Ultra Lounge. On the menu are chicken and waffles (the sauces for the chicken – Hawaiian, barbecue and a house blend – are made in-house), burgers piled high with toppings, homemade lemonade in Mason jars, cereal-crusted French toast, even quesadillas. One of the more popular menu items is the Westside PileUp – fried potatoes and onions, peppers, eggs and any choice of meat.

Affordability is key; hardly anything on the menu is over $10. We here at BLAC tried the shrimp and grits, Fruity Pebbles-crusted French toast and chicken and waffles stuffed with bacon – real, no Bac-Os – on a sunny morning and couldn’t get enough.
