Giving Back: The Soul of Philanthropy | Ann Arbor, Ypsi Community Conversations

Giving Back: The Soul of Philanthropy | Community Conversations is an event hosted by the Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti and greater Washtenaw County community.

The event is associated with the exhibit “Giving Back: The Soul of Philanthropy Reframed and Exhibited,” which is a pop-up exhibit on display from Friday, March 10, 2023 through Saturday, March 25, 2023 with public hours from 9 AM – 9 PM. The exhibit is designed to honor, celebrate, and sustain rich traditions of giving within African American communities, inspire communities to engage in the work of philanthropists, and enhance the capacity of African American institutions to present highly engaging and authentic stories from the Black experience and to lead civic engagement activities that benefit the community.

The event will feature a panel of three speakers: Faye Askew King, Sean Duval, and Lemar Thomas, and will be moderated by Nikia Washington, TSOP Michigan Co-Chair. Faye Askew-King has had a life of working to help African American Endowment Fund at Ann Area Community Foundation, Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation, and United Way of Washtenaw County. Sean Duval is the founder of level transportation service for individuals and corporations and the 2020 Distinguished Citizen Award Winner, recognized by the Boy Scouts of America. Lemar Thomas is a Detroit-based artist, activist, and entrepreneur.

The Soul of Philanthropy discussion is made possible by gracious sponsors: The African American Endowment Fund at Ann Area Community Foundation, Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation, and United Way of Washtenaw County. 

The “Giving Back: The Soul of Philanthropy Reframed and Exhibited “ will be in Detroit, Michigan June 2, 2023, through August 27, 2023, at The Detroit Historical Museum With programming in partnership with community-centered spaces in and around Detroit.
