Freedom House awarded a full grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development

After being denied funding last month, the Detroit organization was at risk of closing its doors

reedom House, a Detroit-based organization that assists refugees and asylum seekers, announced today that the Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded the organization its full grant for the 2017-2018 fiscal year.
Last month, Freedom House spoke out after initially being denied HUD funding, which accounts for 60 percent of their annual budget, which put the organization at risk of closing its doors.
“It is difficult for me to express how profoundly grateful we are for the outpouring of support from our community during this crisis. Your donations, fundraisers, and appeals raised $329,943 for our vital services. Just as important, our residents were able to see how loved and cared for they are by our community,” Freedom House executive director Deborah A. Drennan writes in a letter to supporters.
