Detroit’s Bicycle Artisans Expand to Eastern Market

Wheelhouse Detroit Bike Shop and Detroit Bikes team up to expand their sales to Eastern Market

f you haven't noticed the surge in bicycle popularity in Detroit, then you've been living under a rock-a rock not in the Motor City. Today, Wheelhouse Detroit Bike Shop and Detroit Bikes are teaming up to launch a retail residency today in Eastern Market on Nov. 26, 2013.
With desolate streets perfect for riding and organized Slow Roll events on Monday nights, the bike culture in the D is bigger than ever.
"We are excited to extend the cycling season with this unique collaboration between a retailer, a manufacturer and a neighborhood development agency," Karen Gage, Wheelhouse co-owner, says in a press release about the store opening.
"Eastern Market is the perfect place to showcase the best in American-made and locally sourced bikes and bicycle products."
The new store highlights Detroit Bike's minimalist bicycle, The A-Type. This lightweight, steel, three-speed bike finished in matte black and manufactured in a factory on the west side of Detroit, retails for $550. The A+ model of this bike, fully-loaded with American-made accessories, retails for $700.
The shop will also offer bicycle repairs and rentals, and will be housed in a shipping container inside Shed 4 at Russell and Division streets.
Shinola, The Hub and Wheelhouse Detroit are just a few of the big names selling bikes in the city. And adding to the local shops Detroit Bikes and Detroit Cargo, American-made brand accessories including Wald, King Cage, Greenfield and Jogalite are also featured in the new store location. And they will be selling everything from lock cables and baskets to lights and kickstands.
