Detroit Pre-Medical Scholars Program Gives Students Hands-on Experience

For six weeks, 11th grade aspiring physicians will learn what it takes to walk, talk and diagnose like a medical professional thanks to a partnership among the Wayne State University School of Medicine, Michigan Area Health Education Center (MI-AHEC)  and Detroit Public Schools , supporting an initiative to increase the number of students pursuing careers in medicine called the Detroit Pre-Medical Scholars Program, or DPSP.

"Because our efforts are focused on helping address the shortage of health care workers in Michigan, this program is a great fit for us. We are excited about working with the Wayne State University School of Medicine and the Detroit Public Schools to increase the numbers of primary care workers in our state," said Linda Tarjeft, associate program director of MI-AHEC in a press release announcing the program that is depended on sponsorship. 

Participating students will shadow health care professionals from selected medical centers across Detroit to learn about diseases, treatment processes, trends in health care and the general responsibilities of the medical professional.

But the most important aspect of the Detroit Pre-Medical Scholars Program is its behind-the-scenes view of a professional medical environment, says Tracy Walker, information officer at MI-AHEC.

"This program gives them an inside look at what it takes to be a physician. They will get to research different health care issues, such as asthma and diabetes for a final presentation," Walker says.

Sometimes, Walker says, students may encounter an unfamiliar illness in the hospital and choose to study that as part of the program.

Participating medical centers in the program include Detroit Medical Center, Sinai-Grace Hospital, Henry Ford Hospital, Mercy Primary Care Center, Children's Hospital, the University Health Center Rosa Parks Clinic at Wayne State University, and Detroit Community Health Connection.

The Detroit Pre-Medical Scholars Program will run from Monday, July 15 through Friday, August 23, 2013 and students will receive an undisclosed weekly stipend for their participation in the program.

Program is limited to 11th grade students in Detroit Public Schools.
