Detroit artists look to ‘redefine the black body’

More than 30 artists hope to confront negative stereotypes of blacks in American culture.

With racial tensions running at an all-time high, there are many negative stereotypes of Black people that will need to be confronted.
Detroit’s own Stay Laced and The Carr Center are working together to approach these issues with the help of local artists using “visual language” to redefine the black body.
“Black Identity: Redefining the Black Body” aims to bring new standpoints on modern issues of race in America, and to inspire the community to redefine the Black Body for themselves.
In a monthlong art exhibition that runs Jan. 27 through March 3, gifted Detroit artists focus on redeeming the current negative images of Blacks in American Culture to change the negatives into positives.
The exhibit opens with a semi-formal event held 6 p.m. on Jan. 28 at the Carr Center, 311 E. Grand River Ave., Detroit. For more information, click here.
