Comedian Sinbad Returns to Michigan to Perform at Gilda’s Laughfest

Our native funnyman comes back home to perform on March 16 in Grand Rapids. Here are five reasons to go see him.

inbad ruled '90s TV with starring roles on The Sinbad Show and A Different World-and let's not forget the silver screen favorites, Necessary Roughness, First Kid and Houseguest. But if you have not seen him on screen lately, it's because he's been back to his roots-writing, traveling and performing stand-up across the country. And this weekend, you can check him out live starting 4:30 p.m. on March 16 at Gilda's Laughfest in Grand Rapids.
BLAC got the chance to chat with the funnyman about his upcoming performance. And while it may be a bit of a drive, here are our favorite five reasons to see Sinbad:
1. He loves what he does.
"I could never work a 9-5 job. I never wanted to. I did, but I hated it. I like that I can get everything that's bothering me off my chest. At the end of my show, I'm good."
2. He loves performing in Detroit.
"My favorite memory as a comic was the first time I sold out the Fox Theatre. That was just mind-blowing to me."
3. And he stands behind Michigan.
"When a main way of life leaves or changes, like if they didn't make any more movies in Hollywood, that place would fold up because they don't have that grit. Michigan people have grit. They don't quit. These are hard working people. They just keep going."
4. His jokes are clean.
"It wasn't that important (to be clean). I just cleaned it up one night because it was sounding like a bad imitation of Richard Prior. I didn't set out to be clean at first."
5. But he's still funny.
"People spent too much time about me being clean, they forget I'm funny. For me, it's about being funny and I go toe-to-toe with anybody. Some people thought that I just want to do kid movies. No, I want to do everything. That's just one aspect of my life."
