Coleman A. Young Elementary Students Return to Remodeled Library This Fall

Students at the Detroit school will return to a newly remodeled library this school year after its unveiling on Sept. 12, 2013

With a little bit of hard work and a lot of enthusiasm, Detroit's Coleman A. Young Elementary School beat out more than 60 Michigan schools to win a library renovation through the Detroit Pistons School Makeover contest. And with much anticipation, the newly remodeled library will be unveiled to students and faculty during a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Sept. 12, 2013.
The library marks the 30th renovation by the Detroit Pistons organization, which renovated 29 other facilities into what the organization calls Live, Learn and Play Centers. Renovations to the library include a new paint job, restyled décor, with updated library technology and book collections.
"The kids can't wait. They're going to see that people care about them and their education," says Melissa Scott, principal at Coleman A. Young. "The new library is going to give them the jolt they need from summer vacation."
The school makeover contest, presented in collaboration between the Detroit Pistons and Farm Bureau Insurance, is a show of dedication to active education between the two organizations.
"We congratulate the students, teachers and principals at Coleman A. Young, because the Detroit Pistons organization knows how important it is to learn in an environment that makes them feel more productive," said Dennis Mannion, Palace Sports & Entertainment CEO and president in a press release.
"Farm Bureau Insurance firmly believes in supporting safe and clean learning environments for our youth. Coleman Elementary staff, parents and students, have not only exhibited a need in this area, but have the dedication and commitment to keep it preserved," said Vic Verchereau, Farm Bureau Insurance vice president of marketing. "We are proud to help them in achieving their goal of providing students with an organized, clean and safe media room and library."
The ribbon cutting ceremony begins at 2 p.m. at the Coleman A. Young Elementary, located at 15771 Hubbell St. in Detroit and is open to the public.
