Brian McKnight Talks New Music, Beyoncé, Show in Detroit

t the moment, Brian McKnight's career is in a seemingly comfortable stasis-the creative process. With the launch of his interactive website, the 360 project, he's been able to test the waters of his musical sound and grant his fanbase access to every step along the way.

The website is described as one big "interactive CD," and the same level of access, he says, is carried over to his current tour.

Before his performance on May 22, 2014 starting at 8 p.m. at Sound Board at MotorCity Casino Hotel, we talked with the R&B legend about music direction, Beyoncé being "drunk in love," and the one place he always has to go while visiting Detroit.

For fans who don't know yet, tell us about your 360 project and how can they get involved.

"Mcknight360.com is the only place to get my new music. It's an interactive CD. Every month subscribers receive a brand new song, a new video, a song from my archives that has never been heard, VIP access at concerts and events and more.

What is your favorite part about touring? Do you get to see the cities much?

"My favorite part of touring, beyond the shows themselves, is meeting people and hearing how they feel about the music I've created over the years. I do get to see the cities, but not as much as I would like."

When you are on tour and you come to Detroit, is there particular restaurant or club you love to go to?

It may not be many people's favorite, but I love going to Fishbone's-I really do. I don't leave "The D" (Detroit) without going there.

You pretty much set the standard for love songs and what it means to be an R&B artist. Is there any artist you see on the charts now that you would like to work with?

"I would work with just about anyone who wants to work with me and has the same work ethic."

How do you feel about Beyoncé's more adult-oriented approach to her last album? Do you think it is fitting?

"I think the definition of an artist should be that you create the art you feel you need to create, not what others think you should."

What is one type of lyric you will never hear Brian McKnight say/sing when it comes to adult-themed songs? Is anything off limits?

"I am a songwriter. I write what I want, when I want and how I want. Sometimes there's a message, and sometimes it's just for fun. The difficult part for the listener is figuring out which one is which!"
