Boho Mini Offers a Creative Space for Artistic Exploration

Art is about imagination, and it needs creative space to unfold. That's the premise of Detroit's new Boho Mini. This series of activities gives children a chance to "create, discover, explore, learn and grow" in unique, hands-on ways. Nestled inside Bohomodern – a retail shop featuring housewares, fashion accessories and more – Boho Mini features monthly "experiences" that delve into culture and art.

It all kicks off on Mother's Day, May 13, with The Mama & Me African Tea Party. "Detroit is kind of this melting pot for a lot of different cultures," says founder Margarita Barry, a native Detroiter, artist and mom to a 5-year-old. "I feel like in the traditional educational landscape, preschoolers all the way up to age 12, they don't really get to learn about a lot of other cultures hands-on."

These free experiences continue the first Sunday of each month and spotlight guest instructors from different cultures presenting dance, music and more. The tea party focuses on African-inspired teapot designs, as well as an African folktale. Or register for Kids Open Studio events, happening Sundays starting May 20. "It's free create time," Barry says, "or (you can) just do it as a fun family outing."
