A classic gin fizz is refreshing, effervescent, and velvety in texture thanks to the egg white, soda water, lemon and gin coming together in a magical mixture.
The gin fizz, which first appeared in Jerry Thomas’s 1887 Bartenders Guide , is a fantastic cocktail and perfect for any occasion—it’s an unusual combination of sweet and sour that will please your taste buds and refresh your spirit.
The egg white gives this cocktail an amazing frothy texture that will make you feel like you’re drinking something out of a fancy restaurant.
The other ingredients are pretty straightforward: gin, lemon juice and simple syrup. If you don’t have simple syrup on hand, you can substitute honey or agave nectar. Lightly shake all ingredients except soda water until chilled then pour into a tall glass with ice cubes. Top with soda water (about 1 oz per drink) and garnish with sliced cucumber or lemon wedges if desired!

Classic Gin Fizz Cocktail
Ingredients
- 2 ounces gin
- 3/4 ounce freshly squeezed lemon or lime juice
- 3/4 ounce simple syrup 1:1 ratio
- 1 small or medium egg white optional
- 2 ounces soda water or to taste
- Lemon peel for garnish
Instructions
- Put all ingredients in a cocktail shaker, except for the soda water.
- Add one or two small ice cubes to the cocktail shaker, then shake until the ice has completely melted.
- Pour the chilled and aerated drink into a collins glass without straining.
- As you pour in the soda water, bubbles from that liquid will expand the smaller bubbles already present to form a large foam head.
