‘Ain’t Too Proud’ Premieres in Detroit at Detroit Opera House

The first national tour of the Tony-winning “Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of The Temptations,” the new Broadway smash hit musical, will make its Detroit premiere at the Detroit Opera House August 9–28, 2022 as part of its 60th anniversary season. ‘Ain’t Too Proud’ was originally supposed to make its national tour here in Detroit from July 27 – August 9, 2020. But had to shut down due to the pandemic.

The musical has been nominated for 12 Tony Awards and won best choreography in 2019. The musical recounts The Temptations’ journey from the ghettos of Detroit to the Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Fame. The legendary musical group ascended to the top of the charts with their iconic moves and recognizable harmonies — releasing an astonishing 42 top ten hits, 14 of which reached number one, and were voted the best R&B group of all time by Billboard in 2017. Get a glimpse of how they met, the remarkable heights they reached, and how personal and political tensions threatened to split the group apart as the United States descended into civil war. This gripping tale of brothers, family, devotion, and treachery is told to the music of the band’s greatest songs.

“Ain’t too Proud” debuted on Broadway in March 2019, shattering box office records at Berkeley Rep, The Kennedy Center, CTG’s Ahmanson Theatre, and Toronto’s Princess of Wales Theatre. This musical production, written by Kennedy Prize-winning writer and Detroit-native Dominique Morisseau, was a sold-out hit and broke Canada’s Imperial Theatre box office record. The costumes for the play’s national tour are designed by Tony-winning Paul Tazewell, orchestration is by Tony winner Harold Wheeler with musical direction and arrangements by Kenny Seymour. Brian Harlan Brooks also serves as the musical resident tour director.
