Herbert Dixon

The Story

Before integration transformed professional golf, Herbert Dixon built one of the most accomplished careers in Black golf. The Bartow, Florida native became one of the country's top players on the United Golfers Association circuit, winning dozens of tournaments and earning recognition as one of Florida's most influential golfers. In 1951, Dixon won the National Negro Open Championship, ending Charlie Sifford's five-year reign as champion. His victory cemented his place among the greatest players of the segregated era and helped preserve the competitive legacy of Black professional golf. More than seven decades later, his impact continues to be recognized in the community where his golf journey began.
