Founded April 22, 1937 at the Washington, D.C. home of schoolteacher Helen Webb Harris, Wake-Robin is the first and oldest African American women's golf club in the United States. Its 1938 petition to Interior Secretary Harold Ickes led to the construction of Langston Golf Course — and by 1941, the desegregation of D.C.'s public courses. Ethel Funches, the winningest champion in UGA women's history, joined in 1943. The club remains active today.
