No song right now is uniting the Black community like “My Boo” by the Ghost Town DJs. We’re serious! Is there any other song right now that you can play that both you and your kids will know?
Thanks to a viral “Running Man Challenge,” in which participants challenge each other to the old-school dance, that classic ATL bass sound has gotten a second wind. Well, “My Boo” never really went out of style; it’s perennial barbecue background music, and we know Ciara liked it enough to sample it. But thanks to the Running Man Challenge, the song has actually re-entered the Billboard charts and is charting higher than it did when the song was released 20(!) years ago.
A few other police departments have done their own Running Man Challenges, but now it’s Detroit’s turn at bat. In the video, posted to the department’s Facebook page, officer not only do the running man, but launch into a whole slew of old-school dances. Check out homegirls doing the Kid ‘N Play at the 3:16 mark.
At the end of the video, Chief James Craig, the subject of our July 2015 cover story, issues a challenge to Cincinnati, his old stomping grounds. And there’s information about recruitment for potential DPD trainees.
Say what you will about DPD, but you have to admit this video made you chuckle and showed a little bit more of the city's diversity than – ahem — other videos made in the city recently. Now, back to work.
