etro FoodLand, Detroit's only black-owned supermarket, has provided residents in and around the Grandmont Rosedale neighborhood with fresh food and healthy choices for nearly three decades.
The grocer has outlasted its competition in what owner James Hooks calls "one of Detroit's best neighborhoods." When he first opened Metro FoodLand in 1984, there were three competitors in the same parking lot, and while they're gone, "we're still here," he adds.
With Whole Foods and Meijer opening in Detroit, Hooks hopes that his loyal customers keep coming back.
"If they live within a 2-mile radius of Metro Foodland, why would they want to drive to Whole Foods in Midtown and pay Whole Foods prices?" Hooks says, and adds Metro FoodLand has "the exact same things they have at Meijer."
Plus, Metro FoodLand has its own rewards program that encourages health-conscious choices.
"We reward our customers for buying healthy items like fresh produce, gluten-free items" or "anything that we would consider healthy," Hooks says, noting shoppers who use the store's rewards card earn points to use for discounts.
"We give good service and run a clean store," Hooks says.
