At this year’s Chef Gala Houston, the people to watch are not only the chefs. They are the Culinary Champions—young people with autism who will work beside culinary professionals as dishes are prepared and served.
That shared kitchen is the center of the seventh annual Autism Speaks event, set for Saturday, Oct. 17, at Bayou Music Center. More than 20 chefs are expected, including Food Network personality Eddie Jackson and Season 23 Top Chef contestant Jassi Bindra.
The format gives guests the tastings and auctions expected from a gala while putting the Culinary Champions inside the experience instead of at the edge of the program. Nearly 500 people are expected to attend.
The Houston event began with about 150 guests and has raised more than $1.4 million over its first six years, according to organizers. Proceeds support Autism Speaks’ advocacy, services, research and family resources.
Individual tickets were listed as sold out on Oct. 8, though the event page continued to show sponsorship opportunities. The official page and press release also list different starting times, so check the Chef Gala Houston page for the final schedule and current availability before making plans.
Bayou Music Center is located at 520 Texas Ave. in downtown Houston.
