A hallway becomes a gallery. A porch holds a textile installation. Inside a Detroit home, fabric spills across tables and floors while an artist builds the next piece by hand.

That domestic scale is part of WOMXNHOUSE Detroit’s story. Artist and curator Asia Hamilton founded the residency in 2021 inside her childhood home in Northwest Detroit, creating room for women and nonbinary artists to make work around identity, memory, health, family and community. Inspired by the 1972 Womanhouse project, the Detroit program has since grown beyond one house and into a month of events across the city.

The 2026 public program begins Saturday, Oct. 10, with two site-specific house exhibitions at Irwin House, 2351 W. Grand Blvd., and AKOMA Detroit, 9185 Goodwin St. Opening-day hours are noon to 6 p.m., and the exhibitions remain on view through Oct. 31. Visitors should confirm later viewing hours with the venues.

On Saturday, Oct. 17, WOMXNHOUSE moves outdoors for a free noon-to-6 p.m. activation at Cook Park, 16101 Fenkell St. The program includes a public art reveal, participating artists and community programming. The rain date is Sunday, Oct. 18.

The month closes Friday, Oct. 23, with a screening of The M Factor 2: Before the Pause and a community conversation presented with Femology. The 6–9 p.m. event at Newlab Detroit, 2050 15th St., brings perimenopause, women’s health and aging into the room for a discussion organizers say has too often happened in silence. Seating is limited.

WOMXNHOUSE describes its work as support for BIPOC, women and nonbinary artists through creative opportunity, community connection and economic investment. See registration links and organizer updates on the official WOMXNHOUSE Detroit events page.
