Breakfast can be simple.
Eggs. Grits. Bacon. Toast. Coffee.
Or, apparently, you can have Cajun fried lobster and waffles at 8 in the morning.
Taste Kitchen + Bar is bringing the latter philosophy to Sugar Land.
The Southern comfort restaurant from Houston chef and restaurateur Don Bowie is now serving a dedicated breakfast menu seven days a week at its Sugar Land location, 1550 Lake Pointe Parkway.
Doors open at 8 a.m., and the menu covers quite a bit of territory between traditional breakfast and the kind of dishes that might require going back to bed afterward.
For diners who want to keep things familiar, the Taste Breakfast comes with two eggs prepared any style, a choice of grits or breakfast potatoes, bacon or chicken pan sausage and toast.
From there, things escalate.
Steak & Eggs is an option, as is Lamb & Eggs, which pairs breakfast with a half rack of jerk lamb chops.
There are also several omelets, including the Texas Omelet, Seafood Omelet and Veggie Omelet, plus a breakfast sandwich served on a toasted Martin’s potato bun.
Then you get to the sweet side of the menu.
Taste’s hot cakes come in flavors including Cinnamon Roll, Fruity Pebbles, Cinnamon Toast, Pecan Praline, Peach Cobbler, Apple Cobbler and Chocolate Chip.
There’s also a selection of specialty waffles and Deep Fried Bread Pudding French Toast Sticks finished with powdered sugar and maple syrup.
And Taste hasn’t forgotten the dish that helped make the restaurant recognizable around Houston: chicken and waffles.
The breakfast menu includes Cajun Chicken & Waffles, Nashville Chicken & Waffles, Jerk Chicken & Waffles and Smothered Chicken & Waffles.
And because regular chicken and waffles apparently weren’t enough, there’s also Cajun Fried Lobster & Waffles.
“Breakfast gives us another opportunity to take food people already know and love and give it the Taste treatment,” Bowie said. “Whether you want eggs and grits at 8 in the morning or you’re coming in for lobster and waffles, we want breakfast at Taste to feel like an experience.”
Bowie, a Houston native and the son of two chefs specializing in Cajun and Southern cooking, built Taste around a more expansive interpretation of Southern comfort food. The restaurant now has locations in Sugar Land and downtown Houston.
Adding a full breakfast service gives the Sugar Land restaurant something different from the weekend-brunch model common across the Houston area. You don’t have to wait until Saturday or Sunday, and you don’t have to wait until 11.
Tuesday morning peach cobbler hot cakes are completely acceptable here.
The Sugar Land location is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and Sunday, and from 8 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday. Free Wi-Fi is also available, which means breakfast meetings and the occasional morning on a laptop are possible, too.
For everyone else, there’s always lobster and waffles.
At 8 a.m.
