Juneteenth is a federal holiday, commemorating the day that enslaved Africans in Texas were ultimately emancipated from slavery, two and half years after Lincoln decreed the Emancipation Proclamation. Before it was made a national holiday, Black communities around the country enjoyed yearly celebrations of independence that included sporting events especially baseball, barbecues, and parades. Food and drink have always been central to these gatherings.
Red was thought to symbolize the bloodshed African slaves endured but also their perseverance, and is related to the hibiscus plant and kola nuts, both of which produced mainly red-colored drinks. Both were believed to have come from Western Africa initially during the Transatlantic Slave Trade.
Some popular drinks include hibiscus-based drinks like Sorrel, red Kool-Aid, Strawberry Watermelon Juice, Honeysuckle Red Punch, red carbonated drinks, and even the Strawberry or Watermelon Daiquiri.
Today we would like to share a red drink recipe for you all with a twist, we will be adding hemp hearts not only for their amazing nutritional value but to also symbolize growth and progress and some new traditions to honor the sustainability and coming together of African American communities to remember enslavement’s past and the holiday itself, which is still not recognized in South Dakota, sadly.
Hemp&fork would like to introduce a twist on the classic Strawberry Daiquiri recipe to commemorate Juneteenth.
We’d also like to encourage everyone to celebrate the holiday by learning about Juneteenth and the African American culture that has brought so many wonderful traditions and contributions to our nation, from the arts and music to delicious foods. This year celebrate the history of African Americans who were apart of the very fabric that built this nation with their persistence and perseverance against terrible injustices. African American history is American history and should be celebrated as such.
Strawberry Watermelon Daiquiri with Hemp Hearts
This delicious spring and summer drink is common at BBQs and other get-togethers including Juneteenth which is commemorated every June 19th. Loaded with nutrition this drink can be made with either strawberries or watermelons or both. We’ve also included directions for creating a virgin daiquiri also known as a mocktail. Lastly, we’ve added a twist, hulled hemp seeds also known as hemp hearts which have a nice nutty taste to them and add a wonderful contrast to the drink itself.
