Detroit Sip Coffee Shop Serves Local Product in ‘a Calm Atmosphere’
June 1, 2018·By BLAC Editorial
Owner Jevona Watson says you need not go downtown for a great cup of joe.
June 1, 2018
When Jevona Watson was studying for the Michigan State University bar exam in a coffee shop in East Lansing, her thoughts drifted – to coffee. She remembered being a little girl shopping at the A&P with her parents, who were avid java drinkers. Watson's dream of becoming an attorney was realized in 2004, but her other dream, of opening a coffee shop, happened in 2017.
Detroit Sip, situated in the Bagley neighborhood, serves the University of Detroit, Marygrove College and surrounding area. Watson, a lifelong Detroiter, wanted a shop offering Detroit-based products like Germack and ASHE Supply Co. coffee, INTU Tea and Dutch Girl Donuts – that would also contribute to the community. Detroit, she says, is more than just downtown or the skyline; there are good things happening in the neighborhoods. And coffee's one of them. She adds, "The coffee shop is a calm atmosphere."
