Our D.C. Artist of the Week, Nia Keturah Calhoun, just finished designing and painting a mural in honor of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s confirmation to the Supreme Court.
Calhoun has been a visual artist all of her life, but she marks the day when she started working professionally as an artist eight years ago. In her earlier career, Calhoun created art mostly as a graphic designer and painter. She only began creating murals last year after connecting with No Kings Collective, a design collective that creates murals all around the country. She fell in love with her ability to manipulate large spaces through her art, and she has been assisting with mural designs in D.C. ever since. Judge Jackson’s mural is Calhoun’s first solo debut.
Some of her other popular works include a 2017 commission for the Women’s March and street art in support of SongByrd, a popular music house in D.C. She is also known for her digital portraits, and she has created the cover art for popular artists like Willow Smith and Rare Essence.
