After more than 50 years in the same location, the Black-owned restaurant Louisiana Creole Gumbo is saying farewell to the Eastern Market. But that doesn’t mean the business is saying goodbye to Detroit though. The beloved establishment will have a new home on 2830 Gratiot Ave come Spring 2024. This new location is only a few short minutes away from the original building and offers much more space. Plans for the 4,864-square-foot space included a dining area, a tasting kitchen, and room for live performances. The outside of the building will feature private parking and an outdoor patio for the warmer months.

The move comes after outside gentrification efforts made it hard for the restaurant to stay in its first home. “This whole gentrification thing is really unfair,” current owner Joe Spencer said in an interview back in Febuary. “Especially for people who have held on for this property, we’ve carried this property, we paid for it more than once, twice through the years. We have paid rent, we’ve been a good customer to him. But, he didn’t want to sell to us, although we made an offer to sell to buy it.”

November 28th will be the last day of business in the original Eastern Market location. The new building will accept takeout orders starting December 5th till the full opening in Spring.
